Sexting games are so rare the whole concept piqued my curiosity, which is why I didn't think twice and gave Rosas Are Red a shot as soon as I had the chance. Was it good? Was it bad? Was it painfully average? Only one way to find out!
The game is a sexting sim in which we play as a new user of a hook-up app named Lewdbox and then meet Rosa, a sweet girl looking for new people to meet, who you'll text with and experience things in many ways. It surprised me how immersive the game is since it takes no longer than a few minutes of playtime to get you hooked, and Rosa being the sweetest girl you've ever seen in a porn game sure helps. However, Mia, Rosa's friend, is introduced on the second day and acts as your stand-in in your relationship with Rosa, which may or may not make players feel as cheated as when you find an NTR scene in an otherwise vanilla VN since Mia goes ahead without even asking for your approval.
Gameplay-wise, you spend the entirety of the game chatting with Rosa (and occasionally with Mia) and choosing between different choices that'll influence Rosa's actions—such as what she does or where she goes—and the kind of relationship we have with her, whether you become friend with benefits, have a romantic relationship that's so lovey-dovey you give everyone diabetes, or a kinky one centered on Master/Slave dynamics. Furthermore, your choices also affect which racy pics and steamy hot voicemails you'll receive as you progress in the game. For example, Rosa will send you a pic of her without clothes if you tell her to try some clothes at the mall or a pic of her flashing her crotch if you tell her to go to the gaming cafe.
On another note, the game features different "apps" that don't have much of an impact on the texting side of the game but add a lot to the experience, such as an e-mail app in which you get nothing but spam and a Pou-inspired virtual mascot app that's as annoying as the app that takes inspiration from, among others.
Visually speaking, the game is a feast for the eyes. The UI is so well done that it feels like you're using a phone, though it takes a bit to get used to the amount of blank space on the sides, and the pics you get from Rosa and Mia are nothing short of beautiful. Moreover, the game includes a gallery where you can revisit the pics you've unlocked anytime you want. The audio in the game is also on par with the rest of the game. The tracks are nice to listen to and give the game a relaxing vibe, and the voicemails improve the scenes they are in quite a bit.
Verdict: Great
Rosas Are Red turned out to be way more enjoyable than I initially expected because of its solid and innovative gameplay, pretty art, and lovely characters. It takes about 2 hours to complete it the first time, though you'll spend a lot more time if you try to unlock all the pictures.
