Sometimes, you have to step outside your comfort zone and review games you’d usually skip; otherwise, you might miss a good one. I’m glad I gave this one a chance because I enjoyed it despite not being into either furry or male-on-male content.
The game consists of 5 independent stories, each with different characters and endings. Moreover, it has a very original way to unlock them; instead of just making choices like in your average VN, picking one route or another is tied to your progress in the Match-3 segments.
As for the gameplay, Most games of this kind on Steam tend to imitate Bejeweled, but the goals in this game make it more similar to Candy Crush than any other game of its genre. Some of the later levels in each story replace the square-shaped grids with odd-shaped ones. In some cases, they even add tiles that require you to make a line or two next to them to break them.
The art has a very distinct western style you may or may not like, but it’s undeniable the characters and backgrounds are very well-drawn, even if a few minor details look a bit wonky. I like the way the characters are designed, with Wolfgang being my favorite of the bunch.
They did a great job composing the soundtrack. Each route has a distinctive track that enhances its vibe, making the cuter ones reach a new level of wholesomeness and the lewder ones spicier.
Verdict: Good
Some bits could be better, but Furry Shades of Gay is a game that will delight anyone who is into steamy male-on-male action and either likes furry content or doesn’t mind it. It may not be very long, but it’s entertaining.
