I never imagined I'd enjoy playing The Black Guards of Odom - Desert Town Prison this much. It's a simulation game in which you play as a private who patrols the town searching for criminals to apprehend and does whatever it takes to rise in the ranks. However, the protagonist is anything but an honorable guard as he pockets part of the money he charges to the delinquents, goes way too far with body checks, bribes his peers to make them turn a blind eye to him, and totally not take advantage of the prisoners to *ahem* relieve his primal urges.
The gameplay is simple yet incredibly entertaining, to the point you can't stop playing "just one more round". Each day is split into On-Duty and Off-Duty parts. During the On-duty moments, you spend an allotted time body-checking suspicious people as you do in The Imperial Gatekeeper, chasing suspects that run away or beating those who confront you. Moreover, you get exp every time you arrest someone, leading to you getting promoted and unlocking perks such as more leniency towards mistakes, faster mobility, being able to plant evidence on suspects, and claiming your subordinates' merits as yours, among other things. Did I say the MC is an honest-to-god guard?
Off-duty segments are less action-packed and more "action"-packed as the Pleasure District and the Underground Prison are available for you to go and have some nightly fun. The Pleasure District features different establishments ranging from the cheapest ones with strippers and restrictions on what you can do to the expensive ones that go as far as letting you choose which girl you spend the night with. The Underground Prison, on the other hand, allows you to thoroughly check any recently captured criminal or use the prison's features with the convicts as if it were a BDSM dungeon. You also can sleep in the quarters to pass the night if you're more interested in catching felons than having your way with them.
As for the visuals, I had an idea of what to expect since I played the dev's previous game, The Dead End, but I didn't imagine it'd look this good. Aside from the usual sprites seen in most RPG Maker games, it features beautifully drawn characters with vivid colors and a bit of gloss to make them look more lively. Moreover, there's enough variety in body shape and facial features that it'll be hard to see the same character twice since each character is generated randomly; that's it until you reach the post-game content and use the new feature available to customize the looks of the next prisoner your subordinates will send to prison to your liking, be it their facial features, body and breast size, skin color, etc.
The scenes also got a lot of care put into them since they are smoothly animated, plus the game allows you to customize them a bit to your liking. Do you want scenes with guys in it? Be my guest; Futas? No problem; Breeding and pregnancy? Go for it.
Verdict: Surprisingly Entertaining
The Black Guards of Odom - Desert Town Prison is the kind of game you can easily finish in one sitting because of its addictive gameplay and beautiful visuals. It's a tad short, even though the Append is included, but it's still worth every penny spent on it.
It's a good thing the guards are paid based on commission
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
